Pigot and Co's Commercial Directory for the County of Cheshire 1834

Mottram,
With the Villages of Hollingworth, Tintwistle and Neighbourhood
Mottram, or Mottram-in-Longdendale, is a township in the parish of its name, and hundred of Macclesfield, between 7 and 8 miles S.E. of Stockport, twelve from Manchester, by Stalybridge, and 10 by the new road; 29 to Sheffield, by way of Woodhead, and about the same distance through Glossopdale. The parish extends to the borders of Yorkshire, and includes a bleak and dreary promontary, while other scenery in the neighbourhood of Mottram is very grand; diversified by rugged steep rocks, swelling eminences, and vallies clothed with verdure.

Most of the hills have springs, either issuing from their sides or summits, all of which are of soft water. The Car Tor, in this parish, is a singular elevation, eighty feet in its perpendicular height. The face of the precipice exhibits various strata of rock, coal and slaty matter, and free stone, all regularly disposed as if laid by the hand of art: the sides and summit being partly clothed with foliage present a picturesque effect.

Mottram hill rises above Car Tor, to the height of 450 feet: from the summits of these eminences prospects most extensive may be contemplated. Between the Car Tor and the hills of Derbyshire the Mersey bubbles along its craggy bed, contributing to the variety of the romantic prospect, There are extensive moor grounds in this neighbourhoods, which abound with grouse.

Before the year 1300 the de Burghs had property here; in 1406 it reverted to the crown by the attainder of Lord Lovell; soon after, it was possessed in fee by Sir William Stanley, of Holt, and in 1495 it again was in the crown; the lord of the manor now is Admiral John Richard Delap Tollemarche, who holds a court leet and baron in May and November.

In the parish are some respectable concerns in the spinning and manufacturing of cotton, and calico printing: these, together with collieries in the neighbourhood, machine making, iron founding, &c employ many hands. Travellers until lately experiemced much inconvenience from the want of inn accommodation, this has been obviated by the establishment of the White Hart, a comfortable commercial house.

The church, which is dedicated to St Mary, has a tower and eight bells, and consists besides of a nave, chancel, and side aisles, with private chancels at the end; in one of the latter is a monumental full-length figure of Ralph Staley, in complete armour, with his wife on his left side; and on the altar tomb is a figure of Sergeant Bretland - date 1703.

It is supposed this church was erected about 1480; the registers commence in 1562. A few years since a fine toned organ was added. The living comprises a rectory and vicarage, in the gift of the Bishop of Chester: the present vicar is the Rev William Johneson. Besides the church, there are other places of worship for dissenters, &c.

A free grammar school was founded in 1612, by Robert Garside, who endowed it with about £53 per annum. A handsome building for a Sunday school has lately been erected by voluntary subscription, in which from 5 to 600 children are taught; the new connexion of methodists have also a Sunday school.

The most distinguished native of this town was Lawrence Earnshaw, a most ingenius mechanic, universal architect, and musician; he invented a curious piece of mechanism, tending to save labour in the operation of spinning and reeling cotton: this machine, having exhibited to his friends, with a philanthropy that did honour to his heart, he destroyed, leaving it to subsequent artists, less charitably fastidious, to discover and employ similar works. In clock making his elaborate genius was eminently conspicuous; he died about 1764.

Under the Reform Act, those of Mottram entitled to vote at the election of county members for the northern division of Cheshire poll at Stockport. Two fairs are held here, viz April 27th and October 31st, for cattle. The parish of Mottram comprises the twonships of Godley, Hattersley, Hollingworth, Matley, Mottram, Newton, Stalybridge and Tintwistle, which, together, contained, the the returns for 1821, 10,086 inhabitants, and at the census for 1831 the population had increased to 15,536, of which latter number 2,144 were returned for Mottram township.

HOLLINGWORTH is a small but thriving village and township, in the parish of Mottram, about one mile from that town. The principal business here is cotton spinning, and in the village is an extensive paper mill, as are the print works of the Messrs Dalton. A chapel for the new connexion of methodists has lately been built here. The township contained, by the census of 1831, 1,760 inhabitants.

TINTWISTLE, or Tintwisle, is a village and township in the parish of Mottram, 2 miles from that town, pleasantly situated on the great road which passes into Yorkshire. This is also a village thriving by means of the manufactories, which give employment to many hands. The places of worship here are a chapel for the independents, of which the Rev J C Potter is the minister, and one lately erected for the Wesleyan methodists; there is also a Sunday school supported by the former, in which about 400 children are instructed; in the same building is a day school, wherein six poor children are educated free of expense; a house is also provided for the master rent free. The number of inhabitants in the township, in 1821, was 1,580, and by the returns for 1831 they amounted to 1,820.
