My Binnie family came from Scotland in the 1880s. In the
1891 census, they were living at 8 Albert Road, Preston
and this section of Brown's
map from 1889 shows that area. The road isn't marked,
so I have indicated it with a red blob. As can be seen,
they lived close to Preston Workhouse which eventually became
Sharoe Green Hospital. The buildings still exist, although
it is now purely an NHS administrative centre. To the east
is Fulwood Barracks which again still exists today.
It is a surprising place to find them, given Christopher
Binnie's industrial occupation. It is not a particularly
built up area, indeed there are lots of fields to the north.
This has changed and those fields have been developed for
housing. However, Albert Road remains much as it was with
several large terraced houses and St Thomas' Church. Click
