The
marriage of Jonathan Walker and Elizabeth Stanley (formerly
Hiland)
Elizabeth married Jonathan
Walker at St John the Evangelist Church in Hurst, Ashton-under-Lyne
on 2 October 1866. She was a 39 year old widow living in
Hurst Brook and gave her father's name as Thomas
Hiland who worked as a hatter, Jonathan was a 38 year
widower living at Botany, Hurst. This is a reference to
a number of streets in the area, notably Botany
Lane. He was working as a miner, presumably at one of
the three pits at Broad Oak. His father was Aaron Walker
who was a labourer and the witnesses were James Binns and
Martha Stead. None of them could sign their names.
